Márcio Steuernagel

Márcio Steuernagel (1982) is a Brazilian composer, conductor and artistic researcher. Holding a Master in Music and a Bachelor degree by the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR, Brazil), and a double-major in conducting and composition by the School of Music and Fine Arts of the State University of Paraná (EMBAP/UNESPAR, Brazil), Steuernagel is main conductor of the Orquestra Filarmônica da Universidade Federal do Paraná, Professor for conducting and composition at the School of Music and Fine Artes of the State University of Paraná, conductor of the Ensemble Móbile, and founding member of the Ensemble entreCompositores, with whom he directed the Music Today Biennale (2011 – 2017). Recipient of prizes such as the Michel Debost National Prize (2005), Funarte Prize (2007) and the Funarte Classical Composition Prize (2010), his compositions have been performed by groups such as the Platypus Ensemble (Vienna) and orchestras such as Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná, Camerata Antiqua de Curitiba, Orquestra Filarmônica da Universidade Federal do Paraná and Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná. He has conducted orchestras such as Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná (where he was assistant conductor from 2011 to 2013), Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais, Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro, Çukurova Devlet Senfoni Orkestrasi (Turkey), and Orquestra de Câmara da Cidade de Curitiba. Ahead of orchestras as well as ensembles in Brazil and Europe, Steuernagel has directed many premières, including the Brazilian première of György Ligeti’s “Ramifications” (2015), and the American première of Salvatore Sciarrino’s “L’ideale lucente e le pagine rebate” (2017). He currently lives in Vienna, as a Doctoral Candidate at the Doctoral School for Artistic Research of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz/Zurich University of the Arts, researching “Imperfection in music as a fundamental compositional and performative dimension”, under the orientation of Dr. Andreas Dorschel and Germán Toro-Pérez.
